Chapter 3

Mara had not always been cruel.

That was what made betrayal difficult.

At the beginning, she made Ethan feel human when everyone else treated him like a machine that printed money.

She brought coffee to the lab.

Laughed at his terrible sleep schedule.

Told him Vale Robotics needed a founder with a life outside prototype deadlines.

He believed her.

Victor believed in him too, once.

At least, Ethan thought so.

Victor Crane had been his best friend since graduate school. He knew the first garage, the first failed motor design, the first investor who walked out, the first week payroll almost missed by twelve hours.

Victor used to say, “When this works, we both win.”

Then Vale Robotics did work.

Military logistics contracts.

Medical mobility partnerships.

Automated rescue equipment.

Investors who once ignored Ethan now fought for meetings.

Money changed Victor first.

Attention changed Mara next.

Or maybe money and attention only revealed what had always been waiting.

Ethan noticed the glances before he admitted their meaning.

Victor staying too long after meetings.

Mara knowing details Ethan had never told her.

Both of them insisting he “rest” whenever financial decisions came up.

Then came the accident.

A mountain road.

A failed brake warning.

A hospital room.

Mara’s tears.

Victor’s emergency authority.

Ethan remembered little from the crash, but he remembered one thing clearly.

Before the impact, his car system flashed a maintenance override code.

A code only three people had access to.

One of them was in the wheelchair.

The other two stood in his hospital room with a pen.
