Chapter 2

Ethan had learned to look weaker than he was.
That was not vanity.
It was survival.
After the crash, everyone assumed he was broken.
Doctors said recovery would be slow. Physical therapists said progress would come in quiet increments. Reporters called him the crippled founder of Vale Robotics, though no one used the word on camera.
Mara cried in interviews.
Victor handled company calls.
Board members sent flowers.
Investors sent concern wrapped around questions about voting control.
Ethan watched all of them from a hospital bed and said very little.
Silence was useful.
Pain made people underestimate you.
A wheelchair made arrogant people talk.
Mara visited every afternoon in fitted beige tops and soft perfume, touching his shoulder when nurses entered, speaking gently when doctors passed.
But when they were alone, her voice changed.
“You need to be realistic.”
“You can’t run a company like this.”
“Victor is only helping.”
Ethan began recording dates in his mind.
Not accusations.
Patterns.
Then he found the first inconsistency.
A board authorization he had never approved.
A transfer request buried under emergency management language.
A storage unit paid for through a company account Victor had once claimed was inactive.
The key arrived hidden inside a get-well basket from an old technician loyal to Ethan.
No note.
Just a rusted key wrapped in gauze.
Storage Unit 19.
Ethan closed his hand around it and understood.
Someone had hidden proof before the crash.
May you like
And someone else was getting nervous.
