Chapter 7

Standing hurt.
Ethan did not let his face show how much.
Pain moved through his knee first, then his back, then the deep bruised places the crash had left behind.
His forearm bandage pulled when he gripped the armrest.
His breath shortened.
But he rose.
Not fast.
Not cinematic in a way that ignored injury.
Slow.
Controlled.
Real.
Mara’s mouth opened.
Victor stepped back instinctively.
The folder slipped halfway from his hand.
Ethan straightened until he was fully upright between them and the hospital door.
For one second, no machine beeped loudly enough to cover the silence.
Mara whispered, “How?”
Ethan looked at her.
“Then why am I standing?”
Her face collapsed.
Not completely.
Mara was too practiced for that.
But fear entered her eyes.
Victor looked from Ethan’s legs to the smartwatch to the rusted key now visible in his palm.
“What is that key?” he asked.
Ethan turned it between his fingers.
“You tell me.”
Victor went still.
That was the reaction Ethan wanted.
The key mattered.
Storage Unit 19 mattered.
And Victor knew why.
Mara looked at Victor, suddenly realizing there were secrets he had not shared even with her.
