Chapter 4

Victor liked documents because documents made theft look formal.

He arrived at the hospital with a leather folder, a pen, and a face rehearsed into concern.

“Ethan,” he said, “the board is nervous.”

Ethan stared at the city lights beyond the window.

Mara sat beside him and touched his shoulder.

“You don’t have to fight this. You need to heal.”

Victor placed the folder across Ethan’s knees.

“Temporary control structure. Emergency transfer authority. Clean, limited, reversible.”

Ethan almost smiled.

Victor always added one truthful word to a lie.

Temporary.

Emergency.

Limited.

Reversible.

The folder was not opened wide enough for Ethan to read every clause, but he saw enough.

Vale Robotics.

Voting rights.

Founder authority.

Medical incapacity provisions.

Prepared before the visit.

Prepared before Ethan was supposedly asked.

Mara leaned close.

“Sign it, baby.”

Baby.

She only called him that when she needed him small.

Ethan let his head tilt slightly, as if fatigue had taken him.

Mara’s hand relaxed on the wheelchair.

Victor uncapped the pen.

That was when Mara whispered what she believed Ethan was too weak to process.

“He’s useless now. Just make him sign everything.”

Ethan’s thumb moved under the blanket.

The smartwatch activated.

The room finally began telling the truth in a language he could preserve.
