Chapter 5

Ethan’s smartwatch had been modified by his own team.

Not officially.

Not for sale.

A prototype from an old security project built for patients, witnesses, and field engineers who might need emergency recording without reaching for a phone.

One hidden press.

Audio.

Video from paired devices.

Encrypted backup.

No screen text.

No obvious alert.

Ethan wore it after the crash because he no longer trusted conversations that happened near his bed.

Mara thought it was sentimental.

“You and your gadgets,” she once said, smiling.

Victor thought it was a health tracker.

“Good,” he said. “Maybe it will remind you you’re not invincible.”

Neither of them knew it was connected to Ethan’s private evidence vault.

Neither knew his old chief systems architect still received emergency pings.

Neither knew Ethan had been practicing with his thumb every night, learning the exact pressure needed without moving his arm visibly.

When Mara whispered, Ethan did not react.

When Victor said Vale Robotics would belong to them, Ethan did not react.

That was the discipline pain had taught him.

Let them speak.

Let greed become specific.

Let betrayal identify itself.

Only when Victor pressed the pen into his fingers did Ethan look up.

“Keep talking.”

Those two words were not a challenge.

They were an invitation.

Mara heard warning in them.

Victor heard delay.

Neither understood the recording had already left the room.
