Chapter 13 - The messages to Paige
The strongest emotional evidence came later during civil discovery.
Vanessa sued? Better mediation of wedding expenses involved relevant financial communications, but private messages unrelated maybe not discoverable. Could emerge because Vanessa voluntarily showed them to her therapist? No. We need not rely on legal discovery for emotional truth. Maybe Vanessa herself provides screenshots in a later apology. But a midpoint clue would be good.
Maria received messages from Paige, Vanessa’s closest friend, after Paige watched birthday video.
Paige contacted Maria.
Not me.
“I think Adrian needs to know how bad this got.”
Maria asked permission to forward.
Paige agreed.

Vanessa to Paige, four months before wedding:
Sometimes I feel like I’m marrying Lily and Adrian is the bonus.
Paige:
He’s a dad.
Vanessa:
I know. I just want one person to pick me first.
Not cruel.
Sad.
Then two months later:
Every time I set a boundary, he looks at Lily’s face and folds. She knows it too.
Paige:
She’s six. I don’t think she’s manipulating you.
Vanessa:
Maybe not intentionally.
Then:
I need Adrian to prove marriage changes the hierarchy.
That phrase chilled me.
Paige:
Children are supposed to be high in the hierarchy.
Vanessa:
Not above a wife.
Then the week before Lily’s birthday:
If he humiliates me in front of his family for the kid one more time, I think I’m done.
Paige:
Then postpone the wedding.
Vanessa:
No. I need to know whether he’ll ever back me publicly.
There.
A test.
Not necessarily cake.
But the mindset.
Paige later told Maria:
“I never thought she would do anything to Lily. I thought she was going to confront Adrian.”
That mattered.
No secret co-conspirator.
No friend encouraging cruelty.
Just one woman telling another:

Postpone.
Vanessa did not.
