Chapter 17 - The last secret plan

There was one final discovery.

Not criminal.

Not hidden trust paperwork.

An email draft Vanessa had never sent.

It came from Vanessa herself.

During mediation, she asked to speak privately with both lawyers present.

“I want Adrian to see something.”

She handed over a printed page.

Subject line:

After the wedding

Addressed to me.

Unsent.

She had written it eleven days before Lily’s birthday.

Adrian,

I need you to understand that I cannot marry into a life where Lily’s immediate feelings decide every boundary.

Fair opening.

I need our bedroom to belong to us.

Fair.

I need dates that are not canceled because she is sad.

Context dependent.

I need holidays that do not revolve entirely around Natalie’s traditions.

Hard but discussable.

Then:

I need Lily to learn that our marriage changes who comes first in adult decisions.

There.

And:

If you tell me again that “Lily will always come first,” I think I will hate her eventually, and that terrifies me.

I looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

“Why didn’t you send this?”

“Because I thought you’d cancel.”

I almost laughed from the tragedy of it.

“So you married me instead?”

“I was trying to.”

“Why show me now?”

“Because I want you to know I knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That I was getting worse.”

There.

She had not been blindsided by one emotional outburst.

She recognized jealousy escalating.

She hid it because the wedding had become proof of being chosen.

That was the last clue before the main truth.
