Chapter 25 - Vanessa after the wedding date

The day our wedding had been scheduled came and went.

June 21.

I expected to feel something dramatic.

I had forgotten until Maria texted:

You okay?

I looked at the date.

Oh.

I replied:

Yes. Why?

She sent:

Idiot.

Then I remembered.

That night Lily and I ordered pizza.

No anti-wedding ritual.

No burning invitations.

No victory.

Vanessa spent the day with her mother, I later learned through Claire months afterward.

She had started therapy.

Continued beyond court requirements.

Did I need to know?

Not really.

Claire mentioned it.

I said:

“I’m glad.”

That was true.

Vanessa’s improvement did not create a path back to me.

Consequences are not temporary gates people pass through to reclaim the old relationship.

Sometimes growth helps build the next one.

Not restore the last.

Vanessa eventually moved to another city for work.

Two hours away.

No dramatic exile.

No new scandal.

May you like

Our lives separated.

That was healthy.
