Chapter 11 - THE YELLOW DRESS

Security footage from the mansion foyer captured the slap.
No audio at first.
Then property-system audio recovered.
Evelyn before Daniel hit me:
“Make her understand whose family she married into.”
Me:
“I’m not wiring two hundred fifty thousand dollars for a second condo.”
There.
The argument before the peak.
I had almost forgotten because the slap consumed it.
Evelyn wanted a Palm Beach condo.
Down payment:
$250,000.
Daniel asked me that afternoon.
I said no.
At dinner, Evelyn raised it publicly.
“Emily has decided family means less than one of her tax strategies.”
Relatives stared.
I said:
“Your allowance is already ten thousand a month.”
That was when people first heard the number.
Evelyn became furious.
Daniel took me into the foyer.
Then everyone followed because family conflict is apparently theater.
He said:
“Just approve it.”
“No.”
“You can afford it.”
“That does not make it sensible.”
“My mother gave up everything for us.”
“What did she give up?”
Wrong question.
Evelyn heard.
Then:
“You’ve never understood sacrifice because money solves every inconvenience in your life.”
I said:
“It has solved plenty in yours.”
Daniel slapped me.
There was the full sequence.
Ugly.
But simple.
Then the video captured something I missed.
After I left, Evelyn turned to Daniel.
“You said she would never actually shut it off.”
Daniel answered:
“I know.”
Not:
I didn’t know she could.
May you like
I know.
They had discussed the possibility before.
