Chapter 4 - THE FIRST CALL

Daniel called twenty-three times that night.

I answered once.

Grace listened.

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“Come home.”

“No.”

“I’ve calmed down.”

“Good.”

“Mom’s birthday is destroyed.”

I stared at the wall.

“You hit me.”

“I apologized.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Silence.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

The words arrived immediately.

Empty.

“What happened with the accounts?” he asked.

There.

Not:

Does your face hurt?

Not:

Are you afraid of me?

Accounts.

“What do you mean?”

“My card declined.”

“Which card?”

“The black one.”

I knew.

Hawthorne household card.

I gave Daniel one for household purchases and family travel.

Limit:

$30,000 monthly.

He used it for years.

“What were you trying to buy?”

“Nothing.”

“Then how do you know it declined?”

Silence.

“Daniel?”

“At the club.”

“At eleven at night?”

“They ran my monthly balance.”

The country club.

$17,600 outstanding.

His personal membership.

Paid automatically from my household card.

I had known generally.

Not the amount.

“You can pay it.”

“With what?”

That question stopped me.

Daniel earned money.

Or I thought he did.

He ran Bennett Advisory Partners, a boutique commercial real-estate consulting business.

Good years.

Bad years.

I had never tracked his personal liquidity.

We maintained separate primary accounts by mutual choice.

Shared household expenses mostly flowed through mine because my income was larger.

“How much money do you have?”

He laughed.

“That’s insulting.”

“Then pay your club bill.”

“You know my company is in expansion.”

“I know you told me that.”

Another silence.

I sat straighter.

“Daniel.”

“Don’t do this tonight.”

“How much cash do you have?”

“Emily.”

He hung up.

Grace stared at me.

“Expansion?”

“That’s what he calls it.”

“Do you know his financials?”

“No.”

“Tax returns?”

“Joint summaries. His accountant handles company filings.”

She wrote something.

“I want copies.”

My phone buzzed.

A text from Evelyn.

YOU HAVE HUMILIATED THIS FAMILY FOR THE LAST TIME.

Then:

DANIEL GAVE YOU EVERYTHING.

I handed the phone to Grace.

She read.

“Did he?”

“No.”

“What did Evelyn think he gave you?”

I thought about the mansion.

Cars.

Travel.

The charity gala where she introduced me as:

“Daniel’s wife, Emily. He keeps her very comfortable.”

I had laughed.

Maybe I should have corrected her.

“What if she thinks Daniel paid for everything?”

May you like

Grace’s eyebrows rose.

“Then tomorrow gets interesting.”
