Chapter 1

My Husband Smashed a Plate Over My Head When I Refused to Give His Mother My Brooklyn Apartment.

The white ceramic plate shattered against Elena Mercer’s head before she even had time to stand.

Fragments scattered across her hair, her cream sweater, the dinner table, and the polished floor of the luxury Brooklyn apartment.

For one stunned second, the room went silent.

Then pain burned near her right hairline.

Elena lifted one shaking hand and felt blood.

Daniel Mercer stood over her, breathing hard, still gripping the broken rim of the plate.

“Sign the apartment over tomorrow.”

Across the dining room, Lorraine Mercer smiled with her arms folded, as if her son had only raised his voice instead of breaking a plate over his wife’s head.

Elena steadied herself against the table.

Lorraine stepped closer.

“You’ll ruin his life over one plate?”

Elena pressed a clean cloth against her wound and slowly turned toward her.

“No. He ruined it himself.”

Daniel’s confidence flickered.

Elena rose from the chair, dizzy but controlled. She photographed the shattered ceramic, the blood on the cloth, Daniel’s clenched hand, Lorraine’s face, and the unsigned apartment-transfer papers near the wineglasses.

Daniel reached for her phone.

Elena stepped back.

Then she called 911 on speaker.

“911. What is your emergency?”

Elena placed the phone on the table beside the fragments.

“My husband assaulted me. You have no idea what I’m capable of.”

Outside, faint sirens began rising through the Brooklyn night.

Daniel looked at the documents, the photos, and the tiny blinking security-camera reflection in the window.
