Chapter 5

Pain has a strange way of clearing the room.

Elena heard the ceramic hit the floor.

Heard Daniel breathing.

Heard Lorraine’s small satisfied inhale.

Heard her own pulse beating in her ears.

For a moment, she wanted to collapse.

To cry.

To ask why.

Then she saw the unsigned papers near the wineglasses.

The apartment-transfer documents.

Still waiting.

Still the point.

That helped her understand.

The plate had not been the loss of control.

It had been the tactic.

Daniel wanted shock.

Fear.

Submission.

A signature written while she was bleeding and too ashamed to call anyone.

Elena reached for a clean cloth instead.

Lorraine’s smile tightened.

“You’ll ruin his life over one plate?”

Elena pressed the cloth firmly against the cut.

“No. He ruined it himself.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you say?”

Elena did not answer him.

She picked up her phone.

One photograph.

Then another.

The fragments.

The blood.

The documents.

Daniel’s hand.

Lorraine’s face.

The table.

The wine.

The scene exactly as it was.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Elena, give me that phone.”

She stepped back.

“Touch me again and say it clearly for the recording.”

He stopped.

That was when Lorraine’s smile disappeared.
