Chapter 8

The sirens were faint at first.
A low thread of sound beneath the city noise.
Daniel heard them before Lorraine did.
His eyes moved to the window.
Then to the door.
Then to the papers.
Lorraine’s voice lowered.
“Daniel, don’t say anything else.”
Elena almost smiled.
That was the first smart advice Lorraine had given all night.
But it arrived late.
Six weeks late.
Several threats late.
One shattered plate late.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“What do you want?”
She stared at him.
That question almost broke her more than the plate.
Because it proved he still believed this was negotiation.
Pain for property.
Silence for safety.
Love for leverage.
Elena answered carefully.
“I want you away from me.”
His jaw tightened.
“This is my home too.”
“No,” she said.
Lorraine snapped, “Careful.”
Elena turned toward her.
“I have been careful.”
Then she looked at the unsigned papers.
“Careful enough to know what those are.”
Daniel’s face drained.
He did not know how much she knew.
That was the point.
Elena did not reveal the audit.
Not yet.
She did not explain the financial trail.
Did not show the deed.
Did not expose every account.

She let uncertainty do its work.
