Chapter 3

Lorraine Mercer never begged.

She implied.

That was her method.

“Elena, a wife who truly trusts her husband doesn’t cling to property.”

“Elena, Daniel has sacrificed so much for you.”

“Elena, family assets should stay inside the family.”

Elena once answered, “I am family.”

Lorraine smiled.

“Of course, dear.”

But her eyes said otherwise.

Daniel grew bolder whenever Lorraine was in the room.

He became cruel in small ways first.

A sharp correction.

A slammed cabinet.

A hand gripping Elena’s wrist too tightly when she walked away from an argument.

Then apologies.

Then gifts.

Then another demand.

Sign the authorization.

Review the transfer.

Stop embarrassing him.

Trust his mother.

Elena took pictures of bruises she hoped she would never need to explain.

She saved emails.

Downloaded statements.

Copied drafts of documents Daniel claimed were “routine.”

Then she hired a forensic accountant without telling him.

Not to destroy him.

At first, Elena only wanted to understand how far he had gone.

The answer frightened her.

So she placed a security camera where Daniel would never look.

Not hidden in the ceiling.

Not disguised in art.

Reflected through the window from the dining-room shelf, angled toward the table.

Daniel thought the apartment watched him because he owned the room.
