Chapter 6

Daniel was not used to Elena being calm.
He knew how to fight tears.
He knew how to twist anger.
He knew how to call fear dramatic.
But calm frightened him.
Calm meant she was thinking.
Calm meant she had moved past asking him to become decent.
Elena held the phone in her left hand and kept the cloth pressed to her head with her right.
Daniel glanced toward Lorraine.
For the first time, he looked unsure.
Lorraine unfolded her arms.
“Elena, put the phone down.”
“No.”
“You’re making this worse.”
“No,” Elena said. “You both did that.”
Lorraine moved closer as if she could still command the room.
“Think carefully. Once police are involved, you can’t undo it.”
Elena looked at her.
“That’s why I’m doing it.”
Daniel’s face changed.
He suddenly understood this was not a bluff.
Elena tapped the screen and activated speaker.
The emergency call connected.
“911. What is your emergency?”
Daniel’s eyes went wide.
Lorraine whispered, “Hang up.”
Elena placed the phone on the table beside the broken plate.
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
“My husband assaulted me. You have no idea what I’m capable of.”
No screaming.
No performance.
