Chapter 7

The operator’s voice stayed calm.
Elena gave the address.
Luxury apartment.
Brooklyn.
Domestic assault.
Injury to the head.
Assailant still present.
Daniel whispered, “Elena, stop.”
She ignored him.
Lorraine tried another tactic.
“She fell,” she said loudly toward the phone.
Elena looked at her.
“Say that again.”
Lorraine froze.
The operator asked if Elena was safe.
Elena answered, “Not yet.”
Daniel’s face flushed.
“I never meant to hurt you.”
Elena looked at the ceramic fragments still scattered across the table.
“That’s a strange thing to say while holding the broken rim.”
He looked down.
He was still gripping it.
Slowly, he released the piece onto the table.
The sound was small.
But the operator heard it.
So did the camera.
So did Lorraine.
Elena picked up the apartment-transfer papers with two fingers and photographed them again.
Daniel lunged half a step.
Then stopped when he remembered the call.
His whole body shook with restraint he had not shown before the plate.
Elena watched him carefully.
That was the most honest version of Daniel she had ever seen.
Not sorry.
