Chapter 4

Dinner was Daniel’s idea.

He said they needed to talk calmly.

Lorraine arrived in an elegant black dress, carrying wine and smiling like the evening had already been won.

The apartment-transfer papers were placed beside Daniel’s plate before the food was served.

Elena noticed immediately.

She also noticed the camera reflection blinking faintly in the darkened window.

Good.

Daniel poured wine.

Lorraine complimented the table setting.

For ten minutes, they acted like ordinary family.

Then Daniel slid the documents toward Elena.

“Tomorrow,” he said. “No more delays.”

Elena looked at the papers.

“No.”

The word changed his face.

Lorraine sighed.

“Don’t be childish.”

Elena folded her hands.

“I’m not signing away my home.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Our home.”

“My home,” Elena said.

The silence after that was sharp.

Daniel stood.

Lorraine did not tell him to sit down.

She watched him.

Almost approvingly.

That was when Elena understood Lorraine was not surprised by his rage.

She was waiting for it to work.

Daniel picked up the plate.

Elena saw the movement before she understood what he meant to do.

Then white ceramic flashed under the warm light.
