Chapter 9

Lorraine sat down slowly.

For the first time all evening, she looked her age.

Not elegant.

Not powerful.

Just frightened.

“Elena,” she said, softer now, “families handle things privately.”

Elena looked at the blood-stained cloth in her hand.

“This stopped being private when your son hit me with a plate.”

Lorraine’s lips tightened.

“He lost control.”

“No,” Elena said. “He made a choice.”

Daniel stared at her.

The sirens grew louder.

Still, no police entered.

No arrest happened.

No deed was examined.

No final financial evidence was revealed.

Only the sound approached.

Only the phone recorded.

Only the camera blinked in the window reflection.

Elena stood upright despite dizziness.

Her knees felt weak, but she refused to sit back down at the table where Daniel had tried to reduce her to a signature.

She moved the phone slightly closer to the broken fragments so the call could capture every voice clearly.

Daniel noticed.

“What are you doing?”

Elena looked at him.

“Preserving the room.”

That answer seemed to scare him more than anger would have.

Because Daniel had spent weeks preparing documents.
