The laboratory’s quality director explained the technical issue.
The old test had not merely produced exclusion.
Archived accession data showed the alleged-father sample’s genetic profile matched Mark Whitmore’s newly obtained reference sample with overwhelming probability.
Not Daniel.
Could Daniel and Mark be identical twins?
No.
Brothers.
Distinct profiles.
Therefore the specimen tested seven years earlier was almost certainly Mark’s.
Daniel’s original sample never reached the lab.
The old report was scientifically accurate about the sample it received.
The fraud happened before analysis.
That distinction mattered.
Labs cannot detect a lie about identity if chain-of-custody controls are compromised upstream.
The clinic’s form contained:
Alleged father: Daniel Whitmore.
Collector signature:
Dr. Harold Benson.
Witness:
Margaret Whitmore.
My breath stopped.
Margaret had signed the chain-of-custody form.
Not merely carried paperwork.
