Chapter 14 - WHY DR. BENSON HELPED
Dr. Benson was dead, but records remained.
He had been Margaret’s physician for twenty-two years.
Also a minority investor in Whitmore Restoration’s first office building.
Financial connection.
Not proof of conspiracy.
Then his old office manager produced an email archive.
Margaret to Benson:
Daniel is refusing a second test. Mark will come Tuesday. I need a clean answer before this tears the family apart.
Benson:
I will handle collection.
Margaret:
Use Daniel’s name or the lab will reject the order.
There.
Direct.
Benson replied:
This is not proper procedure.
Margaret:
You know why I’m asking.
Next email:
Done. Destroy duplicate requisition.
My stomach turned.
The dead doctor had participated knowingly.
Why?
No payment found.
No bribe.
Long friendship.
Boundary collapse.
Maybe he believed Margaret’s story that I had slept with Mark and that a substitute sample would reveal it.
