Chapter 13 - MARK ADMITS THE REST

Mark came clean after Jessica temporarily moved out with their children.
Not because of me.
Because she discovered he had lied to her too.
He met Daniel and me in Natalie’s office.
First time the three of us had sat together since Lily was born.
Mark looked at Daniel.
“I knew Mom switched the samples.”
Daniel did not move.
“When?”
“After.”
“When after?”
“The day the report came.”
“How?”
“She told me.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Not rage yet.
Emptiness.
Mark continued.
“She said the doctor made a mistake with labels but the result was still useful because if Claire had been with me, my sample would show something.”
I stared.
“That is scientifically nonsense.”
“I know.”
“Did you know then?”
“Not fully.”
Daniel said:
“You knew it wasn’t my DNA.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me divorce her.”
Mark began crying.
“Yes.”
Daniel stood.
I thought he would hit him.
He did not.
He walked to the window.
“Why?”
Mark whispered:
“Mom said you were happier once you believed it.”
Daniel turned.
“Happier?”
“You stopped fighting everyone.”
That sentence exposed the family.
Conflict reduction mistaken for healing.
Daniel had gone numb.
Returned to work.
Stopped talking about leaving the company.
Margaret called that stability.
Mark let it happen because the family became quieter.
“You watched me abandon my daughter,” Daniel said.
Mark whispered:
“I told myself she wasn’t yours.”
“You knew the sample wasn’t mine.”
“I know.”
Daniel left the room.

No dramatic violence.
That was harder to watch.
