Chapter 18 - THE REASON MARGARET HATED ME

I finally learned the origin.

Not money.

Not infidelity.

Before Daniel and I married, Margaret’s husband Robert died suddenly.

Heart attack.

Daniel became her emotional anchor.

Too much.

He handled bills.

Repairs.

Company meetings.

Mark had young children.

Daniel was available.

Then I entered.

Daniel moved out.

Set boundaries.

Stopped answering midnight calls about things Margaret could handle.

She experienced marriage as theft.

I did not see that then.

I saw only a controlling mother.

Margaret saw me as the person dismantling her family.

When Daniel planned to leave Whitmore Restoration, she panicked.

If he left the company too, she believed she would lose him completely.

Then pregnancy.

Lily made Daniel’s future with me permanent.

Unless Lily was not his.

The suspicion about Mark began because of the passport visit.

Margaret saw him leave my apartment at dawn.

Instead of asking, she built a story.

Then searched for proof.

When Daniel’s legitimate sample threatened to settle the issue, she and Benson replaced it.

Why Mark’s sample?

Because Margaret believed if I had slept with Mark, a genetic result involving him might somehow reveal it.

Scientifically ignorant.

Emotionally purposeful.

Then the result excluded Mark as Lily’s father.

Margaret did something even more irrational.

She treated that exclusion—misreported under Daniel’s name—as proof I cheated with some unknown third man.

She wanted an exclusion.

She got one.

The specific biology did not matter.

Only the conclusion she needed.

That was the central truth.

The first lie was born from fear.

The next seven years required cruelty to keep the lie from being challenged.
