Chapter 19 - DANIEL CONFRONTS MARGARET
I was not present.
He told me later.
I believed his account because Margaret admitted most of it in a recorded family-therapy session months afterward.
Daniel asked:
“Did you know Lily was mine?”
Margaret said:
“I believed Claire was unfaithful.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
She avoided.
He asked again.
Finally:
“I didn’t know.”
“Did you switch the sample?”
“I corrected a process problem.”
He laughed.
“Did you switch it?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell me?”
“No.”
“Did you let me believe Claire slept with Mark?”
“I believed she might have.”
“Did Mark tell you she didn’t?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell me that?”
“No.”
Then:
“Why did you chain Lily?”
Margaret reportedly said:
“She came into the party and called me Grandma in front of people.”
Daniel stopped.
That was it.
Public contradiction.
Margaret had spent seven years telling family Lily was not truly theirs.
Lily entered a room and used one word capable of destabilizing the story.
Grandma.
So Margaret removed her.
Physically.
