Chapter 1

My Mother-in-Law Tried to Take My Newborn and Cut Me From the Family Until I Raised a Sealed DNA Report.
Claire Whitmore had given birth by C-section less than twenty-four hours earlier when Eleanor Whitmore tried to take her daughter.
The private maternity room was bright with Boston daylight.
White bedding.
IV line.
Soft monitor sounds.
A transparent bassinet beside the bed.
Claire lay weak beneath the blanket, one hand gripping the bedrail, her body trembling from pain.
Eleanor stood over her in a cream tweed suit, pearls perfect, blonde hair styled, newborn baby wrapped securely in a pink blanket against her chest.
Then Eleanor grabbed Claire’s hair and pulled her toward the edge of the bed.
“Another useless girl. You’re finished here.”
Claire cried out as pain tore through her abdomen.
Her stitches strained.
Her hand reached for the baby.
“Give me my daughter.”
Eleanor released her hair but stepped toward the doorway.
Behind her, Grant Whitmore stood in his navy suit, pale and silent.
Claire looked at him, pleading.
He adjusted his cuff instead of moving.
“Mother already froze your cards.”
Something in Claire’s face changed.
Pain became clarity.
She reached toward the nightstand and pulled a sealed manila envelope from beneath her phone.
Dr. Rachel Morgan entered fast and stepped between Eleanor and the door.
“Put the baby down and step away.”
Eleanor froze.
Hospital security and a suited legal representative appeared beyond the glass, but no one entered.
Claire raised the sealed envelope beside her face.
“Before you take her, read the DNA results.”
Grant’s expression collapsed.
Eleanor covered her mouth, staring at the envelope as if it had opened itself.
It had not.

But whatever was inside, both Whitmores already feared it.
