Chapter 10

No DNA envelope was opened in the maternity room.
No readable test result appeared.
No complete family secret was revealed.
No newborn was removed from the room.
No arrest was completed behind the glass doors.
The confrontation ended with Claire Whitmore lying weak but awake in the hospital bed, her newborn daughter safely in the bassinet beside her and the sealed manila envelope pressed against her chest.
Her head rested against the pillow.
Her hand trembled from pain.
The small bloodstain near her incision remained a warning that her body still needed care.
But her eyes were clear.
Dr. Rachel Morgan stood between the Whitmore family and the door, calm and immovable.
Hospital security and a legal representative remained visible outside the room.
Grant stood pale and silent in his navy suit, no longer able to pretend he did not understand the danger in Claire’s hand.
Eleanor Whitmore, still elegant in pearls and cream tweed, looked at the envelope with terror she could not fully hide.
Minutes earlier, she had called the newborn another useless girl.
She had tried to pull Claire from the bed.
She had stepped toward the door with the baby as if wealth could outrank motherhood.
Then Claire raised the sealed DNA report.
And the balance shifted.
Claire looked from Eleanor to Grant.
She did not smile.
She did not reveal the secret.
She only held the envelope tighter and turned her head toward the bassinet.
Her daughter slept in pink, untouched by the truth waiting inside that sealed paper.
For now, that was enough.
Eleanor had tried to take the baby.
May you like
But Claire had kept the one thing Eleanor feared more.
Proof.
