Chapter 4

Grant Whitmore had always been a coward in expensive clothing.

Claire hated admitting that because she had once loved him.

She loved the man who brought her coffee during late work nights.

The man who kissed her hand after the first ultrasound.

The man who promised their child would grow up in a softer house than he had.

But Grant became smaller whenever Eleanor entered the room.

He did not raise his voice.

He lowered his eyes.

He did not make decisions.

He waited for permission.

When Eleanor insulted Claire’s family, Grant called it “old-fashioned.”

When Eleanor reviewed Claire’s spending, Grant called it “protective.”

When Eleanor demanded access to the birth plan, Grant said, “It’s easier if she feels included.”

Easier.

For him.

Always for him.

In the hospital room, Claire looked at her husband while Eleanor held their daughter.

“Grant,” she whispered.

He heard her.

She knew he did.

His eyes moved to the baby.

Then to his mother.

Then away.

That was the moment Claire stopped waiting for him.

Not because she stopped hurting.

Because she understood that waiting had become dangerous.

“Mother already froze your cards,” Grant said.

His voice carried shame, but not enough.

Not enough to stop her.

Not enough to protect the baby.

Not enough to choose his wife.

Claire felt the final thread break.

Her daughter made a tiny sound inside the pink blanket.

Claire reached for the envelope.

If Grant would not stand between Eleanor and the door, Claire would use the one thing the Whitmores respected more than pain.
