Chapter 3

The sealed DNA report arrived three weeks before Claire went into labor.

Not from Grant.

Not from Eleanor.

From a clinic Claire had visited alone after one of Eleanor’s old comments refused to leave her mind.

“You don’t even understand what family blood means,” Eleanor had said during dinner, smiling at the guests while cutting into her salmon.

Claire had laughed politely.

Later, she thought about the way Grant froze when his mother said it.

The way Eleanor corrected herself too quickly.

The way an old housekeeper once stopped speaking the moment Claire entered the pantry.

So Claire asked questions.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Without accusing anyone.

The answers came back in fragments.

A missing hospital record.

A corrected birth certificate.

An old trust clause that mentioned “biological continuity” in language too strange to ignore.

And finally, the sealed report.

Claire did not open it in front of Grant.

She did not confront Eleanor.

She placed it beneath her phone on the hospital nightstand because she knew childbirth would bring the Whitmores into one room.

And people like Eleanor revealed more when they believed you were too weak to fight back.

Still, Claire had not expected Eleanor to be this cruel.

Not with the baby in her arms.

Not while Claire could barely sit upright.

Not while Grant stood there watching.

But now Eleanor was moving toward the doorway, newborn held safely but possessively, as if motherhood could be overruled by pearls and money.

Claire’s fingers closed around the envelope.

The paper edge dug into her palm.
