Chapter 7

Eleanor had built her life on rooms obeying her.
Servants lowered their voices.
Lawyers returned her calls.
Doctors accepted donations.
Relatives adjusted themselves around her moods.
Grant became the finest example of her success.
A grown man who still looked at his mother before answering his wife.
But the hospital room did not obey the same rules.
Dr. Morgan stood between Eleanor and control.
The security officers watched through the glass.
The legal representative took notes without entering.
The newborn was back beside Claire.
And the sealed DNA report remained unopened.
Eleanor tried another angle.
“Claire, dear,” she said, suddenly soft, “you are exhausted. Hand me the envelope, and we can discuss this when you are stable.”
Claire almost laughed.
Dear.
Stable.
Discuss.
The language of people who wanted evidence moved before witnesses understood its value.
Claire slid the envelope under the blanket against her chest.
“No.”
Eleanor’s eyes flashed.
Grant took another step.
Dr. Morgan looked at him.
“Mr. Whitmore, stay where you are.”
His face reddened.
“This is my wife.”
“Then behave like it.”
The sentence struck harder than a slap.
Grant stopped.
Claire stared at him.
For one second, shame reached him.
Not enough to change him.
But enough to show he had heard.
Eleanor saw it and panicked.
“Grant,” she snapped.
He looked at her automatically.
Claire’s heart sank, but this time it did not surprise her.
The spell was still there.

But now everyone could see it.
