Chapter 6

The newborn was placed back into the transparent bassinet beside Claire.
Carefully.
Gently.
Safely.
Claire reached through the bedrail and touched the edge of the pink blanket with two fingers.
Her daughter’s face was peaceful, unaware of pearls, money, bloodlines, or family cruelty.
Claire’s breath shook.
Eleanor watched the gesture with a look Claire could not read.
Rage.
Fear.
Possession.
Maybe all three.
Grant stepped forward.
“What is that envelope?”
Claire looked at him.
The man who had just admitted her cards were frozen.
The man who had watched his mother pull her hair.
The man who had needed a sealed report to become afraid.
“You know enough to be scared of it,” Claire said.
Grant swallowed.
“Claire.”
“No.”
Her voice was weak.
The word was not.
Mara, the hospital’s legal representative visible through the glass, remained outside with security. No one rushed in. No arrest happened. No one turned the room into a spectacle.
That made the silence sharper.
Eleanor tried to recover.
“Whatever she thinks she has, she is confused. She just had surgery.”
Dr. Morgan turned toward her.
“Do not diagnose my patient for me.”
Eleanor’s mouth closed.
Claire held the envelope against her chest.
“I may be weak,” she said, “but I am not confused.”
Grant’s eyes stayed fixed on the sealed paper.
He did not ask about his daughter.

That told Claire everything.
