Chapter 8

Claire’s pain worsened.

She could feel it under the medication now, deep and pulling, a reminder that determination did not erase surgery.

Dr. Morgan noticed the sweat on her forehead.

“You need to lie back.”

Claire nodded but kept hold of the envelope.

Dr. Morgan adjusted the bed with careful hands.

The bassinet remained beside her.

The baby made a small sleepy sound.

Claire turned her head toward her daughter.

“I’m here,” she whispered.

Eleanor’s expression twisted at those words.

“You won’t be if you keep this up.”

The room went still.

Grant closed his eyes.

Too late.

The threat had landed in front of witnesses.

Dr. Morgan’s face changed.

Nurse staff shifted beyond the glass.

The legal representative wrote something down.

Eleanor realized the mistake and tried to smooth it.

“I meant medically. She is unstable.”

Claire did not argue.

She did not need to.

A woman who truly feared for Claire’s health would not have tried to leave with the baby minutes earlier.

Grant looked toward the door.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that his mother’s sentences were no longer disappearing into private walls.

They were being heard.

Claire raised the envelope slightly.

“You wanted me cut off,” she said quietly. “Cards. Access. Family. My child.”

Eleanor said nothing.

Claire’s voice dropped.

“But you forgot I could still read.”

Grant’s face tightened.

Not because he understood the contents.
