Chapter 5

Dr. Rachel Morgan did not enter like a guest.

She entered like a line being drawn.

The monitor had sounded when Claire tried to sit upright. The small bloodstain near the incision had widened enough to alarm the nurse outside.

Dr. Morgan came in fast, took one look at the room, and understood the danger was not only medical.

Claire in pain.

Eleanor near the door.

Newborn in her arms.

Grant doing nothing.

“Put the baby down and step away.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“Doctor, this is a family matter.”

Dr. Morgan’s voice stayed calm.

“This is my patient’s room.”

“I am the child’s grandmother.”

“And she is the child’s mother.”

The words filled the space between them.

Claire almost closed her eyes from relief.

Not because everything was safe.

It was not.

But because someone had named the truth plainly.

Eleanor tightened her hold without harming the baby, more offended than frightened at first.

Then she saw the envelope in Claire’s hand.

Her expression changed.

Not much.

Enough.

Grant saw it too.

His throat moved.

Claire lifted the sealed report higher.

No one opened it.

No one read it.

No one revealed what was inside.

Yet the entire room shifted.

Because fear is often more honest than confession.

Eleanor looked at Grant.

Grant looked at the floor.

Dr. Morgan saw both reactions and stepped closer to the bassinet.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” she said, “the baby goes down now.”
