Chapter 10 - The Man in Daniel’s CoatLily described the man from the park again.
He knew Daniel’s nickname.
He knew the song Daniel sang at bedtime.
He wore Daniel’s wedding ring.
But Lily remembered one detail she had not considered important.
“He called me Lillian.”
Daniel never used her full name.
Aaron did.
Rebecca found an old family video proving it.
The man who gave Lily the barrette was likely Aaron.
Why would he impersonate his dead brother?
Karen admitted Aaron had contacted her after Daniel’s crash. He claimed Daniel survived and needed help hiding. Karen passed messages, money, and documents without meeting him face-to-face for months.
The park meeting was the first time she saw him.
“He looked different because of the injuries,” she said.
“Or because he wasn’t Daniel.”
Karen began trembling.
Aaron had used his brother’s secrets to direct the investigation. He knew the family stories, Daniel’s passwords, and the trust records.
Daniel’s actual survival remained uncertain.
Police searched Aaron’s former address.
Inside a sealed crawlspace, they found Daniel’s damaged wallet, hospital wristband, and photographs taken after the crash.
One image showed Daniel unconscious in a private clinic.
Aaron stood beside the bed.
Patricia stood behind him.
The date was three days after the family funeral.
Patricia knew Daniel survived.
She helped conceal him.
A handwritten clinic log recorded that Daniel woke after surgery and attempted to call Rebecca. A nurse sedated him under Patricia’s order.
Two weeks later, Aaron signed a transfer document using Daniel’s name.
The destination was omitted.
Nora confronted Patricia.
She finally abandoned the grieving-grandmother performance.
“Daniel wanted to destroy this family.”
“He wanted to expose your crimes,” Rebecca said.
“He wanted to give everything to Catherine.”
“It belonged to her.”
“Catherine would have ruined Robert.”
“You confined her for thirty-four years.”
“I preserved the life my children deserved.”
Rebecca stepped closer.
“You preserved a house that was never yours by hurting every child who threatened your comfort.”
Patricia’s eyes hardened.
“You were the first threat.”
Robert entered the interview room before officers could stop him.
He had agreed to cooperate in exchange for medical consideration after reporting chest pain.
He looked at Patricia.
“Tell her where Daniel went.”
Patricia stared at her husband.
“You promised.”
“That promise ended when you hurt Lily.”
Robert revealed that Daniel was moved to a private rehabilitation unit beneath the Whitmore children’s charity.
Aaron supervised the false identity.
David financed it without knowing the patient was Daniel.
“Is he alive?” Rebecca asked.
Robert looked away.
“He was when Aaron removed him.”
“When?”
“Six weeks ago.”
The same time “Daniel” stopped contacting Karen.
Aaron had taken the real Daniel from the clinic and disappeared.
Robert believed he intended to trade Daniel for control of Madison’s paternity records and Lily’s trust.
Then the hospital’s front desk received a package.
Inside was Daniel’s wedding ring and a phone playing a live audio feed.
A weak male voice whispered:
“Rebecca, do not trust Robert. He was upstairs with Lily.”
Robert had claimed he never entered the guest bedroom.
