Chapter 5 - Karen’s BargainKaren arrived at the hospital voluntarily.

She wore no makeup and had changed out of her party dress. David followed with two attorneys, demanding that she leave.

Karen refused.

“I gave Patricia the medication,” she admitted.

Rebecca stood between her and Lily’s room.

“You drugged my daughter.”

“I gave her what Patricia said was a child-safe sleep aid.”

“You are a nurse. You knew better.”

Karen lowered her eyes.

“I knew it was wrong.”

The truth was not softened by fear.

Karen explained that Patricia wanted Lily asleep so they could create photographs suggesting Rebecca had left the child unattended after an emotional outburst.

Robert planned to place Lily at the bottom of the staircase and claim she had fallen while Rebecca argued with the family.

Karen believed the plan involved no direct injury.

“Then why was she beaten?” Rebecca asked.

Karen’s voice shook.

“Patricia lost control when Lily woke.”

Lily had opened her eyes while Patricia removed the glitter barrette. She whispered that her father had told her never to trust Grandma.

Patricia struck her.

Robert tried to silence the child.

The violence escalated.

Karen said she froze.

“You did not freeze when you carried the cup,” Rebecca replied.

“No.”

“You did not freeze when you hid the barrette.”

“No.”

“You only froze when stopping them required courage.”

Karen began crying.

David stepped forward.

“She is making statements under distress.”

Karen turned on him.

“You told me this was the only way to protect Madison.”

David’s face changed.

He had convinced Karen that Lily’s branch of the trust would leave Madison without financial protection. He claimed Rebecca planned to expose Karen’s role in Melissa’s guardianship case.

Karen believed the birthday scheme would disqualify Rebecca and secure Madison’s future.

She did not know David intended to frame her as the sole person responsible for the medication.

Inside his car, police found a prepared confession bearing Karen’s digital signature.

It stated she drugged and attacked Lily out of jealousy.

David had planned to sacrifice his wife if the scheme failed.

Karen gave Nora access to the family’s private cloud account.

There were custody petitions for Rebecca, Melissa, and six other women connected to Whitmore property transfers.

One folder concerned Daniel.

It contained surveillance photographs from the week before his death.

The final image showed Daniel meeting Robert inside a parking garage.

Robert held the glitter barrette in his hand.

Daniel must have given him a prototype or explained its recording function.

Robert knew Lily’s barrette could preserve audio.

That was why Patricia removed it before the attack.

But another photograph showed something Rebecca did not expect.

Karen was sitting inside Daniel’s car two hours before his crash.

She had denied seeing him that day.

“What were you doing with my husband?” Rebecca asked.

Karen looked toward David.

“He asked me to help expose the family.”

“Did you?”

“I tried.”

“Did David know?”

Karen’s silence answered.

David’s attorney ended the interview.

As he left, Madison ran toward her mother.

Karen embraced her.

Madison whispered something that only Rebecca heard because she stood close.

“Mommy, tell Aunt Rebecca where Grandpa keeps Daddy Daniel’s red phone.”

Karen went rigid.

Daniel’s second phone had never been recovered from the crash.
