“I thought the message came from him,” she said.
“You helped them drug Lily after receiving that message,” Rebecca replied.
“I believed the evidence would protect her before anyone touched her.”
“You gambled with my daughter.”
“Yes.”
Karen’s honesty remained selective.
Nora recovered her deleted messages with Aaron.
Most concerned evidence.
One concerned money.
After Rebecca is disqualified, Madison’s trust becomes active. You promised Daniel’s shares would move with it.
Karen had not merely tried to expose the Whitmores.
She expected to gain control of Daniel’s assets through Madison.
Aaron claimed he never made that promise.
The message came from his account, but the device location placed him inside Daniel’s clinic room at the time.
Someone could have used the phone while Aaron treated his brother.
Daniel asked to see the full trust amendment.
Evelyn opened the protected file.
Madison’s paternity created a hidden financial link.
Because Aaron was Daniel’s brother, Madison remained eligible for part of the Cole family trust.
If Rebecca and Lily were disqualified, Karen could control both Madison’s Whitmore acknowledgment and her Cole inheritance.
The birthday plan could have made Karen one of the wealthiest people in the family.
David stared at his wife.
“Was any of this about protecting our daughter?”
Karen looked at Madison.
“All of it was.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the answer every person in this family uses.”
Karen insisted she never expected violence. Yet she prepared the medication, hid the barrette, reset Madison’s tablet, and helped maintain the false story until police found the cup.
Her fear was real.
So was her ambition.
The foyer phone contained another recording from after Rebecca left in the ambulance.
Karen confronted Patricia.
“You promised no one would hurt Lily.”
Patricia laughed.
“You promised Madison would never learn who her father is.”
Karen replied:
“She will when Rebecca loses custody. Aaron will take both girls until the trust settles.”
Aaron stared.
“I never agreed to take Lily.”
The scheme had been designed to make Aaron the emergency guardian using Daniel’s identity.
If police focused on the Whitmores, Karen could remove both children through a separate legal route.
She had prepared an escape before the party began.
Nora searched Karen’s vehicle.
Inside were passports for Karen, Madison, Lily, and Aaron under false names.
A cooler contained children’s medication.
Airline tickets were booked for midnight.
Karen’s face collapsed.
“They were only insurance.”
Rebecca stepped between Karen and the girls.
“Children are not insurance.”
Then Daniel remembered something.
While confined at the clinic, he heard Karen speaking with Patricia through a ventilation shaft. Karen said:
“If Lily wakes, make Rebecca angry enough to look guilty.”
Karen had known the child might be harmed.
She had not simply failed to stop the plan.
She helped shape it.
Before Nora could complete the interview, Madison disappeared from the mansion’s child-services room.
The window was open.
A yellow unicorn ribbon lay on the sill.
