Chapter 3 - Madison’s Secret CallDetective Nora moved Patricia and Robert into separate interview rooms.
Neither was formally arrested. Their attorneys arrived before officers could finish preliminary questioning, and both insisted the audio file had been manipulated.
David remained at the mansion with Karen and Madison.
He claimed his daughter was too frightened to be moved.
Rebecca knew what fear looked like.
She had seen it on Madison’s face when Lily was carried downstairs.
At 9:06, Rebecca received a video call from Madison’s tablet.
The image shook violently.
Madison appeared inside a dark closet.
“Aunt Rebecca?”
“Madison, where are your parents?”
“Daddy’s downstairs yelling. Mommy told me not to call you.”
“Are you safe?”
The child nodded, then began crying.
“Grandma made Lily drink the pink juice.”
Rebecca sat upright.
“What pink juice?”
“The one by the cake. Lily said it tasted bad, but Grandma said she couldn’t have dessert unless she finished it.”
Madison had watched Patricia carry Lily’s cup upstairs after Rebecca left the bedroom.
Robert followed.
David remained near the staircase.
Karen took Madison into the pantry and turned on loud music.
“Did your mother know what was happening?” Rebecca asked.
Madison wiped her face.
“She said Grandma only wanted to scare Lily.”
A shadow moved beneath the closet door.
Madison lowered her voice.
“I found Lily’s shiny clip.”
“Where?”
“Grandma gave it to Mommy.”
The glitter barrette was not ordinary.
Daniel, Rebecca’s late husband, had bought it for Lily shortly before his fatal highway crash. He told Rebecca it contained a child-location chip because Lily had once wandered away at a park.
Rebecca had forgotten the device after Daniel died.
Madison held the barrette near the camera.
“Mommy said she has to break it before the police find the little card.”
Footsteps approached.
“Hide it,” Rebecca whispered.
The closet door opened.
Karen appeared behind Madison.
The call ended.
Rebecca immediately sent the recording to Nora.
Police returned to the mansion with a preservation order.
Karen met them at the front door.
She claimed Madison had imagined the conversation after overhearing adults discuss the investigation.
The barrette was gone.
Madison’s tablet had been reset.
David accused Rebecca of manipulating his daughter.
Then police found a pink plastic cup inside the outdoor garbage bin.
The rim contained Lily’s DNA.
The liquid residue contained the same sedative found in her blood.
Patricia’s fingerprints covered the cup.
Karen’s fingerprints were inside the trash-bin lid.
David’s were on the outside.
Every adult in the house had touched part of the evidence.
Yet none admitted knowing why.
At the hospital, Lily woke for less than a minute.
Her swollen eyes found Rebecca.
“Mommy?”
“I’m here.”
“Grandma said Daddy died because he told.”
Rebecca froze.
“What did Daddy tell?”
Lily’s lips trembled.
“That Uncle David takes houses from crying people.”
Before Rebecca could ask more, Lily drifted back to sleep.
Daniel had not died in a random highway accident.
