Rebecca had never been legally adopted by Patricia because Robert’s name already appeared on her original birth certificate.
Patricia’s name was added later through a court amendment.
The original mother was listed as Catherine Hale.
Catherine worked as Eleanor Whitmore’s estate assistant for nine years.
She disappeared shortly after Rebecca’s birth.
Robert always told the family Catherine moved overseas.
No travel record existed.
Evelyn found monthly payments from the Whitmore trust to a private residential facility called Greenhaven House.
The payments continued for thirty-four years.
Rebecca was thirty-four.
“Is Catherine alive?” she asked.
No one answered until Nora obtained access to Greenhaven’s records.
Catherine Hale had been admitted under the diagnosis of persistent delusional disorder. Her file claimed she falsely believed she had given birth to Robert Whitmore’s child.
The admitting relative was Patricia.
The approving physician was Robert’s college friend.
Catherine had been imprisoned inside a medical lie since Rebecca was an infant.
Police reached Greenhaven before the family could move her.
Catherine sat beside a window in a modest room, her hair silver despite being only fifty-eight. She recognized Rebecca immediately from photographs kept beneath her mattress.
“You have Robert’s eyes,” she whispered.
Rebecca could not call her Mother.
Not yet.
She sat beside her and asked about Daniel.
Catherine knew him.
He visited Greenhaven twice before his disappearance. He promised to prove Patricia fabricated her diagnosis and restore her identity.
During the second visit, he gave Catherine a small envelope.
Inside was a storage key and a note:
If I disappear, Rebecca must learn why Eleanor protected Lily before Lily was born.
The storage key opened a private deposit box.
Eleanor’s original trust documents were inside.
One amendment revealed that the Whitmore estate did not belong to Robert.
Eleanor had discovered Robert and Patricia using family companies to acquire homes through fraudulent guardianships. She transferred controlling ownership into a holding company named Hale Legacy Partners.
The beneficiary was Catherine Hale.
If Catherine remained medically incapacitated, authority passed to Rebecca.
If Rebecca were disqualified, authority passed to Lily.
The mansion, investment accounts, and Whitmore Development itself were already controlled by Rebecca’s maternal line.
Robert and Patricia had lived for decades inside property belonging to the woman they confined.
Rebecca understood the birthday attack differently now.
They were not only trying to seize Lily’s inheritance.
They were trying to prevent Catherine’s release from exposing that they owned nothing.
At Greenhaven, Catherine handed Rebecca another photograph.
It showed Daniel standing outside the facility eighteen months after his supposed death.
The timestamp was verified.
“He came back,” Rebecca said.
Catherine nodded.
“He was injured. He said he could not contact you because David was watching Lily.”
“Where did he go?”
“He followed the ambulance records.”
“What ambulance?”
“The one that moved children after Whitmore custody hearings.”
Daniel had survived the crash and continued investigating in secret.
Or someone had impersonated him.
Before Catherine could explain further, Greenhaven’s fire alarm activated.
A nurse entered and said a court transfer order required Catherine’s immediate relocation.
