Rebecca never saw the final report.
Daniel died when his brakes failed on a mountain road.
Police blamed mechanical wear.
Robert paid for the funeral.
David took control of Daniel’s company laptop and claimed it belonged to Whitmore Development because the investigation was work-related.
Rebecca had been too shattered to fight.
Now Evelyn accessed the archived trust server.
Daniel had uploaded fragments of his findings before the crash.
Whitmore Development did not grow through ordinary real-estate purchases. It targeted families facing divorce, illness, guardianship disputes, and child-custody emergencies.
Robert provided emergency loans.
Patricia connected families to private therapists.
David arranged rapid property transfers.
When parents became legally “unstable,” their homes moved into temporary family trusts controlled by Whitmore companies.
Many never got them back.
“Uncle David takes houses from crying people,” Lily had said.
She must have heard Daniel describe it before his death.
One acquisition involved Karen’s older sister, Melissa Grant.
Melissa lost custody of her son after Patricia’s therapist declared her emotionally dangerous. Her home transferred to Whitmore Development.
Three months later, Karen married David.
Rebecca stared at the file.
“Karen entered the family because of what they did to her sister.”
“Or because she helped them do it,” Evelyn said.
The anonymous photograph of Lily’s barrette had been sent through a phone registered to Melissa Grant.
Melissa was supposed to be living in Arizona.
Nora traced the device to a prepaid signal near the mansion.
Police searched the property again.
They found Melissa in a locked apartment above the detached garage.
She had lived there for fourteen months under the name Marie Parker.
Karen had told the family Melissa died from an overdose.
Melissa was alive, frightened, and heavily medicated.
At the hospital, she gave a recorded statement.
David used her custody case to force Karen’s cooperation. Karen married him believing she could recover her nephew’s records from inside the Whitmore family.
Instead, she became financially dependent on David.
“Did Karen know they planned to hurt Lily?” Nora asked.
Melissa closed her eyes.
“She knew Patricia wanted a scene. She thought they would insult Rebecca until she left.”
“Why hide the barrette?”
“Daniel gave Karen instructions before he died. He said the tracker stored a backup whenever it heard Patricia’s voice.”
Rebecca looked toward Evelyn.
Daniel had suspected the family years earlier.
The barrette contained more than location data.
Its memory card may have recorded the entire guest-room attack.
“Where is it now?” Rebecca asked.
Melissa answered through tears.
“Karen gave it to David.”
Police searched him.
Nothing.
Then Madison appeared at the hospital with a social worker.
She carried her stuffed birthday purse.
Inside was Lily’s glitter barrette.
“I switched it with one from my dress-up box,” she whispered.
The memory card remained intact.
The recording began with Patricia entering the guest room.
Then Robert said:
“Do it quickly. Rebecca will be downstairs for ten minutes.”
A third adult voice answered.
