Chapter 9 - The Child Patricia Called RealDavid laughed when Nora asked for a voluntary DNA sample.

“Daniel was paranoid.”

“Did you ever question Madison’s paternity?”

“No.”

Karen said nothing.

That silence forced the truth into the room.

Madison was conceived during a six-month separation between Karen and David. Karen told David the child was his after they reconciled.

The biological father was a man named Aaron Cole.

Daniel’s younger brother.

Rebecca knew Aaron only as the relative who stopped attending family events after Daniel’s funeral.

He supposedly moved to Canada.

Karen met Aaron while asking for help investigating Melissa’s guardianship. Their relationship was brief.

Aaron disappeared before Madison was born.

Daniel later learned the truth and created a protected paternity record.

Patricia’s “real grandchild” was not biologically connected to her at all.

Lily, whom she despised, was Robert’s biological granddaughter through Rebecca.

The irony would have been almost satisfying if children had not been hurt beneath it.

David’s face changed when Karen finally admitted everything.

“You let me raise another man’s child.”

“You used my sister’s stolen house to force me into this marriage.”

“You lied for seven years.”

“So did you.”

Madison stood outside the interview room with a child advocate. She heard enough to understand that adults were arguing about who she belonged to.

Rebecca asked that the conversation stop.

“No one discusses her like property.”

David looked toward Madison through the glass.

For the first time, his anger broke into something resembling grief.

He loved her.

That did not erase what he had done to other children.

Karen revealed why she helped the birthday plan.

Patricia discovered the hidden paternity file three weeks earlier. She threatened to expose Madison and remove her from the trust unless Karen supplied the sedative and helped frame Rebecca.

Karen believed compliance would preserve Madison’s place in the family.

Instead, Patricia planned to use the truth after the trust transfer.

Once David controlled Lily’s branch, Patricia would reveal Madison’s paternity and force David to surrender everything to her.

Everyone was blackmailing everyone.

The children were the currency.

Evelyn examined Eleanor’s trust.

Biology mattered less than Patricia believed. Madison had been legally acknowledged and raised by David. She remained protected regardless of DNA.

Patricia’s threat had been false.

Karen had helped drug Lily to prevent a consequence that did not legally exist.

Then Nora received a laboratory alert.

The blood found in Daniel’s river property matched him.

It was fresh enough to be less than two months old.

Another sample belonged to Aaron Cole.

Both brothers had been at the property.

The security recording showed two men entering on the same night.

Only one left.

Police found signs of a struggle near the riverbank.

Daniel’s final photograph of Karen had been taken after that date.

Either Daniel survived the encounter—

or Aaron had taken his brother’s identity.
