Then Lily said:
“Daddy told me Grandma stole Mommy’s house.”
Patricia slapped her.
Robert grabbed Patricia’s arm.
For one second, it sounded as though he might stop her.

“Not the face. We need the injuries to look like Rebecca lost control on the stairs.”
Patricia struck Lily again.
Robert held the child’s shoulders.
Karen began begging them to stop.
A fourth person entered.
David.
He had claimed he remained downstairs.
“What did you do?” he demanded.
Patricia answered:
“What you were too weak to do.”
David did not help Lily.
He opened the bedroom wardrobe and removed a prepared bag containing Rebecca’s medication, a broken champagne flute, and one of her scarves.
The family intended to stage the scene after Rebecca discovered Lily.
David heard Rebecca running upstairs and pulled everyone into the connecting bathroom.
Patricia remained behind long enough to lock the guest-room door.

Karen’s later cooperation did not erase her presence.
David’s silence did not make him less involved.
