Chapter 20 - The civil case

We did not sue for millions.

Lily healed.

Medical costs were finite.

Still, there were expenses.

Emergency transport.

Orthopedics.

Follow-up imaging.

Physical therapy after immobilization.

Counseling.

Missed work.

Carla’s homeowners situation complicated coverage because she did not own Helen and Frank’s house.

Their homeowners insurer became involved because the injury occurred on the property and questions existed about negligent supervision.

Carla also had personal liability exposure.

The case settled without trial.

Funds covered medical and therapy expenses and created a modest restricted account for Lily.

Not a fortune.

No “pain and suffering made us rich” ending.

The civil process also required something I valued more:

Statements under oath.

Who knew what.

When.

What the chats meant.

Not because depositions heal children.

Because family mythology hates transcripts.
