Chapter 22 - Michael’s apology

Michael’s first apology was terrible.
“Mom, I’m sorry things got physical.”
Ellen answered:
“Things did not get physical. You did.”
Second attempt:
“I should have handled Cassandra differently.”
Ellen:
“And me?”
Silence.
Third attempt came nearly eighteen months later.
A letter.
Mom, I grabbed the arm you were already protecting. You asked me to stop. I shoved you anyway. When you fell, I did not help you because at that moment I was more afraid you would expose what I had lied about than I was afraid you were hurt.
Ellen stopped reading.
Cried.
Then continued.
Cassandra hit you. That is her responsibility. I used her anger as permission for mine. That is mine.
No request for money.
No request for job.
May you like
No request for house.
Better.
