Chapter 23 - My apology

I owed Michael one too.

Not for terminating support.

Not for refusing the house transfer.

For the lock.

I asked to meet him in a therapist’s office.

He came.

I said:

“The night of the wedding, I disabled your access to North Howe before I had legal advice.”

He stared.

“I remember.”

“I did it because I wanted you to feel powerless.”

“Yes.”

“I told myself I was protecting your mother.”

“You were protecting her.”

“And punishing you.”

Silence.

“I’m sorry for using the house that way.”

Michael looked surprised.

Then angry.

“Do you know what Cassandra said when the code stopped working?”

“No.”

“She said, ‘See? They can take everything whenever they want.’”

I absorbed that.

Then:

“She was wrong about the house being hers.”

“Yes.”

“But my action made her fear look true.”

Michael nodded.

“Yeah.”

That apology did not restore us.

It made one part accurate.
