Chapter 10 - My own history At nineteen, I was not calm.

I want that understood.
People later watched breakfast-hall footage and said:
“How did you stay so composed?”
Practice.
Not personality.
My first year in the Navy, an older sailor once took my tray because I was “sitting in his spot.”
I protested.
He told me:
“You’ll understand rank when you earn some.”
He was not even senior enough to say that with credibility.
I threw my drink at him.
Then spent weeks being known as the woman who “couldn’t take a joke.”
I learned two things.
First:
Humiliation feels physically hot.
Second:
The person who loses control can become the easiest part of the story to discipline.
That did not mean never act.
May you like
It meant act accurately.
At thirty-four, I no longer needed to prove my anger existed by making the room feel it.
