Chapter 1

Parents Forge a DNR to Sacrifice Their Injured Daughter—Then a Mysterious Woman Seals the Trauma Bay.
Claire Bennett woke to fluorescent lights, the taste of plastic from an oxygen mask, and her mother’s voice saying she was expendable.
She could not move much.
Her arms were wrapped in blood-marked bandages.
An IV line pulled at her wrist.
The trauma bay around her blurred in cold white light, monitors beeping in uneven rhythms, privacy curtains half-drawn between beds.
Across the room, her brother Daniel lay behind a cluster of nurses.
Claire could not see him clearly.
She could hear her parents.
Martha Bennett stood near Daniel’s bed, pretending to cry whenever staff looked at her.
But when she turned toward Claire, her face went flat.
Cold.
Almost annoyed that Claire was still breathing.
“Save Daniel first,” Martha said. “She’s always been expendable.”
Dr. Nathan Cole went still.
Robert Bennett shoved a folded document toward him and pointed at Claire’s bed.
“Her DNR is signed. Take whatever our son needs.”
Claire’s heartbeat spiked on the monitor.
Nurse Laura Reed looked down at her immediately.
Dr. Cole caught the paper before it slid onto Claire’s bandaged arm.
He scanned it once.
Then again.
His eyes sharpened.
“That document does not authorize any of this.”
Robert stepped closer.
“You’re wasting time.”
Dr. Cole moved between the parents and Claire’s bed.
Behind him, Claire forced two fingers to move against the blanket.
Tap.
Pause.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Nurse Laura saw it.
Her expression changed, but her voice stayed controlled.
She reached under the counter and activated the trauma-room recording system.
Then she looked at Dr. Cole.
“Doctor… she’s conscious.”
Martha’s face transformed.
Not grief.
Panic.
Robert turned toward Claire like she had betrayed them by hearing.
Then the trauma-bay doors swung open.
A woman in a black business suit and dark overcoat entered with two hospital administrators behind her.
Silver-blonde hair.
Calm eyes.
Authority so sharp the room seemed to step aside before she spoke.
She looked at Claire first.
Then at Martha.
“Step away from her bed. Now.”
Martha stared at the woman.
Her face emptied of color.
