Chapter 9

Claire’s voice returned two days later.

Rough.

Thin.

Alive.

Her first full sentence was not about Daniel.

Not about the accident.

Not about the forged document.

It was a question for Evelyn.

“Did she take me?”

The room went quiet.

Marissa stood near the foot of the bed.

Laura adjusted an IV line and pretended not to listen while absolutely listening.

Evelyn sat in the chair beside Claire, hands folded so tightly her knuckles whitened.

She did not answer quickly.

That was how Claire knew the answer mattered.

“I gave birth to a daughter twenty-nine years ago,” Evelyn said. “In a private clinic outside Akron.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“Martha?”

“She worked there.”

The monitor beeped steadily.

Not calm.

Just steady.

“I was told my baby died before I could hold her.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Evelyn’s voice trembled only once.

“I spent years believing grief was my only proof she existed.”

Marissa covered her mouth.

Claire opened her eyes again.

“Am I her?”

Evelyn leaned forward.

“The DNA says you are connected to me in a way no stranger could be.”

She swallowed.

“But I will not force a name on you while you are lying in a hospital bed.”

That sentence did what no dramatic claim could have done.

It made Claire trust her.

Martha would have demanded.

Evelyn waited.

“What did Martha do?” Claire whispered.

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“That is what investigators are determining.”

Claire understood.

Not everything would be told in that room.

Not yet.

Maybe not all at once.

Some truths require legal files, not whispered guesses.

Later that afternoon, Detective Harris from hospital police and local authorities took Claire’s statement.

Not long.

Not cruel.

Just enough.

Did she sign the DNR?

No.

Did she authorize Martha or Robert?

No.

Did she hear them ask Dr. Cole to prioritize Daniel?

Yes.

Did she fear they intended harm?

Claire looked toward the glass, where Martha sat guarded in the hall.

“Yes,” she said.

Martha stared back.
