Chapter 8

By nightfall, the forged DNR had become only the first document.

Hospital compliance found the scanned upload.

It had been submitted through an emergency intake tablet using Robert’s credentials.

The signature did not match Claire’s license signature.

The witness line contained a nurse’s name who had retired four years earlier.

The form itself was outdated.

Worse, someone had tried to attach it to a broader anatomical donation statement that Claire had never signed.

Dr. Cole’s anger became quieter with each discovery.

Quiet anger is often the kind that lasts.

Marissa arrived at the hospital just before midnight.

She was still wearing mismatched shoes and a winter coat over pajamas.

When security brought her into the restricted hallway, she saw Martha and Robert sitting under watch near the administrative office.

Martha looked up.

“You did this.”

Marissa stopped.

“No.”

“You poisoned her against us.”

Marissa’s voice shook, but she did not retreat.

“You tried to make a living woman disappear behind a form.”

Robert stood.

Security moved immediately.

He sat back down.

Inside Claire’s room, Marissa took one look at her and began crying silently.

Claire lifted two fingers weakly.

Marissa laughed through tears.

“Still bossing people around?”

Claire’s eyes softened.

Evelyn stood near the window.

Not intruding.

Not claiming.

Marissa noticed her.

“You’re Evelyn Cross.”

“Yes.”

“I sent the DNA packet.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.”

The air changed.

Claire looked between them.

Marissa touched her hand gently.

“I’m sorry. I was going to tell you after you recovered from the accident. I didn’t know—”

Claire squeezed once.

Stop.

Not now.

Marissa understood.

There would be time for truth later.

Maybe.

For now, Claire needed to survive the people who had tried to make decisions over her breathing body.

Outside the room, Martha saw Evelyn through the glass.

Their eyes met.

For once, Martha did not look like a mother.

May you like

She looked like a woman whose oldest crime had walked into the hospital wearing a black coat.
