Chapter 3

The accident happened on a rainy Cleveland evening.

Claire had driven in only because Daniel called.

That was what hurt later.

Not that she came.

That she came for him.

His voice had been shaky.

He said he needed help.

Said their parents were “making everything worse.”

Said he had done something stupid with money and did not know how to tell them.

Claire almost said no.

Then she heard him breathe like a scared little boy.

So she went.

The roads were slick.

Traffic lights smeared red and green across the windshield.

Daniel was supposed to meet her at a diner near the hospital district.

He never made it.

A truck ran a light two blocks away.

A chain of metal, rain, horns, glass.

Claire remembered only fragments after that.

A seat belt cutting into her shoulder.

A woman shouting for someone to call 911.

Her own hand reaching for her phone.

Then Daniel’s name on a paramedic’s radio.

Then nothing clear until the trauma bay.

But Martha and Robert arrived with paperwork too quickly.

That was what Nurse Laura later told the detective.

Most parents arrive with panic.

Martha arrived with a folder.

Robert arrived with demands.

They did not ask first whether Claire was alive.

They asked whether Daniel was stable.

Then whether Claire was compatible.

Dr. Cole refused to discuss Daniel’s care in front of them beyond what privacy rules allowed.

Robert became aggressive.

Martha cried.

Then stopped crying when she thought no one watched.

She pulled the folded document from her bag and said, “Claire signed this. She never wanted extreme measures.”

Dr. Cole took the paper.

He had seen real DNR forms.

He had seen confused families.

He had seen grief make people irrational.

This was different.

The signature looked wrong.

The language was wrong.

The request was worse.

A DNR did not allow anyone to remove treatment from a conscious trauma patient.

It did not authorize donation.

It did not transfer a living person’s body to another patient.

Dr. Cole looked at Robert and understood something cold.

This family was not confused.

They were trying.
