Chapter 4

Claire heard more than they thought.
Pain came in waves.
Sound came through water.
But certain words cut cleanly.
Expendable.
Signed.
Daniel first.
Take whatever.
Her mother’s voice did not sound broken.
That was the part Claire would remember.
Martha sounded practical.
Like Claire was a storage unit being emptied for someone more important.
Nurse Laura stayed close to Claire’s bed.
She adjusted the oxygen mask.
Checked the IV line.
Then bent just slightly.
“Claire,” she whispered, barely moving her lips. “Can you hear me?”
Claire forced her eyelids to move.
Not enough.
Laura glanced toward Dr. Cole, then back.
“If you can hear me, tap twice.”
Claire focused everything she had into two fingers.
Tap.
Tap.
Laura’s face changed.
Not dramatically.
Professionally.
But her eyes filled with anger.
“Good,” she whispered. “You are not alone.”
Those words went through Claire like medicine.
Dr. Cole was still arguing with Robert.
“This paper is not a valid order for what you are requesting.”
Robert jabbed a finger at the tray.
“She signed it.”
“She is conscious.”
“She doesn’t know what’s happening.”
Martha stepped closer.
“She has always been unstable under pressure.”
Claire’s monitor jumped.
Laura placed a hand lightly on the blanket.
“Breathe slowly if you can.”
Martha saw the movement.
Her eyes sharpened.
For the first time, she looked afraid of Claire herself.
Not her injuries.
Her awareness.
Robert leaned toward Dr. Cole.
“You have no idea what our family has been through.”
Dr. Cole’s voice dropped.
“I know a patient is lying in front of me while you argue for something she did not consent to.”
Then Laura repeated, louder this time:
“Doctor… she’s conscious.”
The room shifted.
A resident stepped back.
One administrator near the nurses’ station looked up.
Robert’s face hardened.
Martha’s hand moved toward the document.
Laura moved faster.
She picked it up with gloved fingers and placed it into a clear evidence sleeve from the trauma desk.
Martha whispered, “You can’t do that.”
Laura looked at her.
May you like
“I just did.”
