Chapter 6

The trauma bay was sealed within minutes.
Not locked like a prison.
Controlled like an evidence scene.
Administrators redirected nonessential staff.
Security stationed themselves outside.
Dr. Cole continued treating Claire while Laura documented every word, every movement, every disputed instruction.
Robert tried to call someone.
No signal.
Or perhaps the hospital Wi-Fi had stopped recognizing him as important.
“This is unlawful,” he shouted.
Evelyn did not raise her voice.
“Your daughter is conscious, and your document is under review.”
“My daughter?”
He looked toward Claire.
Then toward Martha.
Something passed across his face.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
Martha grabbed his arm.
“Robert, stop.”
That scared Claire more than Robert yelling.
Martha was not telling him to stop because it was wrong.
She was telling him to stop because he might say too much.
Evelyn leaned slightly toward Laura.
“Has the patient indicated awareness?”
Laura nodded.
“Two-finger response, repeated. Three-tap distress signal after parental statements.”
“Recorded?”
“Yes.”
Martha’s face twisted.
“You recorded us?”
Laura answered without apology.
“The room recorded a patient-safety event.”
Dr. Cole reviewed Claire’s chart again.
“She has no valid DNR on file. Her actual advance directive lists Marissa Vale as proxy if needed.”
Evelyn’s eyes moved to Martha.
“Not you.”
Martha said nothing.
Robert tried another tactic.
“Claire has always been troubled. She says things. She misunderstands.”
Behind the oxygen mask, Claire forced her fingers to move.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Laura bent close.
“Do you want them away from you?”
Claire tapped twice.
Yes.
Dr. Cole looked at security.
“Remove Robert and Martha Bennett from direct access to the patient.”
Robert exploded.
“You can’t keep parents from their child.”
Evelyn finally turned fully toward him.
“She is twenty-nine.”
Her voice softened only when she looked back at Claire.
“And she is not property.”
Those words broke something inside Claire.
Not in pain.
In recognition.
For years, she had been treated like a resource.
A spare.
A debt.
A body available for family needs.
Now, in the coldest room of her life, a stranger said the sentence her parents never had.
May you like
She belonged to herself.
