Chapter 7

Martha broke when Evelyn said the name Marissa Vale.

Not visibly to everyone.

But Claire saw it.

Marissa was Claire’s best friend and medical proxy.

She was also the person who had encouraged Claire to take a DNA test six months earlier after noticing something strange in her family paperwork.

Claire’s childhood vaccination record had a different hospital listed than her birth certificate.

Her blood type did not match the one Martha always claimed.

A pediatric note from age four referenced “placement history,” though Martha insisted Claire had been born naturally after a difficult pregnancy.

Claire had asked once.

Only once.

Martha slapped the folder shut and said, “Not every piece of paper deserves your attention.”

That was the beginning.

The DNA test led to a genetic genealogy alert.

Then an email from a private investigator.

Then a name.

Cross.

Claire had not answered yet.

She had been afraid.

Afraid to hurt Daniel.

Afraid to detonate her family.

Afraid to learn she had never truly had one.

Now Evelyn Cross stood beside her trauma bed.

Martha knew.

Robert knew.

Evelyn knew enough.

But the full truth still hovered outside the room like a storm waiting for glass to break.

Evelyn spoke to Dr. Cole.

“I need chain of custody on the document, access logs for the patient file, and every admission form submitted by these people.”

Robert laughed harshly.

“You think paperwork changes blood?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

“It reveals who lied about it.”

Martha’s hand covered her mouth.

Robert turned on her.

“What did you tell her?”

Martha hissed, “Nothing.”

But nothing was already too much.

Claire tried to speak.

The oxygen mask muffled the sound.

Laura leaned in.

“Don’t force it.”

Claire moved her fingers.

One tap.

Pause.

Two taps.

Laura said, “Do you want Evelyn to stay?”

Claire tapped twice.

Yes.

Evelyn’s composure almost failed.

Almost.

She stepped closer, still not touching.

“I will stay where you can see me.”

Martha made a sound that might have been rage or fear.

“You don’t get to do this now.”

Evelyn’s eyes never left Claire.

“No, Martha.”

“You don’t get to stop it now.”
